Advancing AI systems in the physical world

Purdue’s Institute for Physical Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) is defining what’s possible when AI meets the real world — from microelectronics to materials, agriculture to aerospace. We integrate the expertise of one of the world’s most innovative engineering and science universities with a vision to embed trustworthy, high-performance AI into the systems that move, fuel, feed and secure our planet.

IPAI is working with researchers across disciplines to build technical foundations in AI models, secure and verifiable systems, robotics, autonomy, semiconductors, digital twins, and ethics. We’re also tackling real-world challenges in defense, manufacturing, agriculture and food systems, transportation and logistics, and health care.

Research Collaboration

We partner with industry leaders to create smarter manufacturing, stronger security, better health care and next-generation robotics — using breakthrough research to create solutions that move industries forward. Our Steering Committee drives these initiatives.

We collaborate with StreamCI, an AI streaming-data platform; SMART USA, a semiconductor manufacturer and research firm; CyManII, focused on cybersecurity R&D; CERIAS, Purdue’s cybersecurity center; and Purdue’s Young Institute and Lilly 360, both focused on advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing.

AI Experts at Purdue

AI is shaping almost every subject, every discipline and every career field as it evolves. Purdue’s sought-after experts share their insights on timely topics including self-driving cars and human-AI interaction.

IPAI-Affiliated Centers and Labs

Purdue’s existing research centers address a wide variety of areas that provide for rapid growth in research excellence in physical AI — including open agricultural data, neuromorphic computing, deepfake detection, edge AI systems, smart transportation data, AI-based manufacturing and more.
